Reinventing Space Conference 28 & 29 November 2022, Aerospace Bristol

The current global energy crisis focuses our minds on how crucial a reliable energy source is to humankind’s existence. As fossil fuels continue to decline, more emphasis is being put on renewables including solar. But what if solar power could be harnessed in space? Could it be used to meet the world’s energy needs? If so, how do we make it happen and what are the challenges involved? This is one of the major themes to be discussed at this year’s Reinventing Space conference.

The annual Reinventing Space (RISpace) conference, now in its 19th year, attracts some of the best minds, innovators and organisations in the industry and provides the opportunity to hear about the latest breakthroughs, share ideas and offers unique networking opportunities.

This year’s conference and exhibition, sponsored in part with Invest Bristol & Bath and organised by the British Interplanetary Society (BIS), will take place on 28-29 November 2022 at Aerospace Bristol. With the first-ever UK spaceport launch scheduled to take place in Cornwall in the near future, this is an especially significant time for the space industry in the southwest of England, particularly as several companies in Bristol and the surrounding region are directly involved in the provision of systems and components.

Alistair Scott, President of the British Interplanetary Society said "The RISpace conference has always focussed on the technologies that will change the way we exploit space in the coming decades. As the wave of commercial space exploitation continues to grow, we are looking forward to welcoming speakers from around the globe to talk about topics as diverse as satellite on-orbit refuelling and space-based solar power".

Simon Feast, CEO of the British Interplanetary Society added “Many of the topics in this year’s conference address longer-term logistical issues that, once solved, will accelerate growth of commercial activity in earth orbit. The space community and supply chain needs to take look at how to better integrate present-day, commercially driven activities, with longer-term aspirations for the improved use of space.  This is important both for exploration of space beyond the moon, as well as improving life on earth. Reinventing Space is an excellent platform for people to connect, to identify the potential pathways in achieving this goal, and to collaborate in prioritising the next steps. This promises to be a particularly exciting conference and we are very much looking forward to it.”

This year's conference runs across two consecutive days:-

Day 1 - Strategic Foundations - Monday 28 November

  • Space Based Nuclear Power
  • Satellite On-orbit Refuelling
  • Novel Propulsion
  • Multi-satellite Deployment Missions
  • Orbit Data Processing
  • Slingshot Aerospace
  • Space-based Manufacture
  • In-situ resource utilisation
  • Reinventing the UK supply chain
  • Solar System Communications
  • Life sciences and microgravity
  • Power Sats: The economics of beaming vs in-situ manufacturing

Day 2 - Space Energy Applications - Tuesday 29 November

  •  Space Based Solar Power (SBSP)
  • SBSP Concepts: CASSIOPeiA, SPS Alpha
  • SBSP Technology: the challenges and opportunities
  • Regulation and Finance
  • International Collaboration
  • The Space Energy Initiative

A parallel Student/Careers Day will also take place on Tuesday run by the BIS NextGen Network and UKSEDS, supporting our future generation.

On the evening of the 29th, RISpace is honoured to be hosting the Sir Arthur Clarke Awards and Gala dinner. Tickets for the conference and the awards are still available from the BIS Space Shop.
