Bristol named greenest city in England in new study

St Andrews Park

Bristol has been named the greenest city in England, according to a new study. The study, created by Millets, ranked the cities in the UK by factors including the number of green spaces, annual emissions and number of walking trails to find the greenest regions.

Out of a potential score of ten, Bristol obtained an eco-friendly rating of 9.27. The study says that Bristol has on average 4.5 parks per 1000-metre radius, the second highest amongst the top ten greenest cities in England, only behind Liverpool.

The study found that Bristol has on average 12.5 Electric Vehicle chargers per 10km², the lowest number of the top ten cities in England and way behind Coventry’s 135.7 chargers. Bristol has 13.6 walking trails per 10km². Bristol’s 150 walking trails are the second highest in England behind Sheffield’s 186.

However, the annual emissions per km² was just 6.9, the lowest in the top ten, resulting in the best eco-friendly score in England. To put into comparison, the next lowest in the top ten cities for annual emissions was Brighton and Hove with 9.5, and Bristol’s number is exactly half of Liverpool.

The study said: “Bristol tops the list as the most eco-friendly destination in England, scoring 9.27 out of 10. The green city is surrounded by the charming countryside of Somerset, Gloucestershire, and the Cotswolds.

“Within a 1,000-metre radius, the city has over 4.5 parks and gardens. Crowned England’s first Cycling City, Bristol supports sustainable travel, offering many bike hire shops and scenic cycling paths, such as the popular Bristol to Bath Railway Path.

“Additionally, Bristol has many nature reserves, from nationally important sites such as salt marshes to wetland wildflower grassland and ancient woodlands. The city’s local nature reserves include Lamplighter’s Marsh and Manor Woods Valley.”

“Bristol tops the list as the most eco-friendly destination in England, scoring 9.27 out of 10."
